Cybraphon is #18 in List Hot 100

The List magazine have placed our robot wardrobe at number 18 in their 2009 Hot 100. We’re only 3 places lower than Frankie Boyle and 82 higher than Susan Boyle!

MY ROBOT FRIEND
Claire Sawers speaks to Tommy Perman, of the FOUND collective, about their moody, social-networking-obsessed musical instrument, Cybraphon.

In the past, the Edinburgh art-pop collective FOUND have used robots, lasers and sewing machines in their live gigs. It was their creation of Cybraphon though – the mechanical, musical wardrobe with a heart – that won them a Scottish BAFTA.

Tommy Perman and Ziggy Campbell joined with engineer (sic) Simon Kirby to make a popularity-obsessed band inspired by orchestrions from the 1900s. Cybraphon plats music, but is also linked to Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, and feels a range of emotions – from desolation to delirium – depending on how many people are tweeting about him, or how many Facebook friends he’s got.

The public got so into the project, they started sending Cybraphon tins of furniture polish or trying to cheer him up online with jokes, flattery or flirting.

‘The morning when we woke up and saw Cybrpahon had made it onto a Texan news programme, that was pretty amazing,’ says Perman. ‘It was one of those shows that looked just like a Brass Eye spoof, but the fact that Cybraphon had traveled so far, and created such a buzz, without us really having to do anything, that was great.’

Since its birth during the Edinburgh Festival, Cybraphon has featured in newspapers in China, Brazil, Italy and Spain and has now been offered several collaborative projects.

snarebrained is a download album featuring a collection of exclusive remixes and songs previously only available on limited edition vinyl. It features collaborations and remixes from Lisa Lindley Jones, De Rosa, Jonnie Common (Down The Tiny Steps) and Akira Kiteshi.

The album has been produced to help raise money to pay for the band to travel to SxSW and as such FOUND have devised an unconventional payment method. The album has five different prices so that the music buyer can decide how much to give FOUND towards their campaign to conquering the US.

Payment is made through PayPal, but you don’t need to have an account, just a credit or debit card. Here’s What’s Next . . .

2008 was another busy year for us and 2009 is set to be busier still. In December we played our first international gigs in Germany and we’re traveling much further afield this March to play at the world famous SXSW festival in Austin, Texas as well as a few shows in New York City. We’re really excited about these great opportunities, but I’m a bit scared as we’re going to have to fund the trip ourselves and it is COSTLY . . . we have a few fund raising ideas up our sleeves which we will unveil here soon.

We’re also been working on a brand new EP / mini album called ‘The Fidelities EP’ coming out as a collaborative release on Aufgeladen Und Bereit / Fence when the year heats up a bit. The tracks are away being mastered as I type, and I will upload a few of them to our myspace player when I get them back.

And I musn’t forget the latest hare-brained project myself, Ziggy and our friend Simon Kirby are working on, the ‘Autonomous Emotional Robot Band’ called Cybraphon. Eh? Yeah, I know . . . just have a look at the website: www.cybraphon.com

FOUND in Deutschland

We are very excited to be playing our first dates outside of the UK in Germany at the beginning of December. Our friend Markus from Aufgeladen Und Bereit is bringing us over to play two gigs and two radio sessions, in and around Hamburg. If you’re in the area we’d love to see you there! FOUND versus De Rosa

This Saturday 15 November sees the age-old Edinburgh / Glasgow rivalries reignited and we will be battling against our new Glaswegian nemesis, De Rosa at a special showcase gig at Sleazys. For the occasion, we have remixed De Rosa’s beautiful ‘Robin Song’ and they have retaliated with a explosive reformation of our own ‘Reshaping’. Every ticket holder will be given an exclusive download link and password to get their ears on these rare sonic treats. Tickets are £5 and doors open at 8 pm.

FOUND’s Acoustic Fringe

Are you tired of the Edinburgh Festival already? Forget all the imported crap comedy, amateur dramatics and shonky music . . . come see some homegrown crap comedy, amateur dramatics and shonky music.

FOUND are doing a special set at Acoustic Edinburgh for the Fringe – it will be stripped back and a little different from usual – we’re planning on playing a few numbers from the last album that we don’t normally play live. Here’s the details . . .
